Valerio Cornale is one of the largest collectors in the world of antiques related to Cuban cigars, as well as owner of La Casa del Habano of the Cayman Islands.

I met Valerio the first time at the Festival del Habano. It was in February 2005. He was wearing a panama and smoked a diadema.

Then I met him this October at La Casa del Habano Club Havana. Other panama, another cigar. This time he smoked a Behike 52. Of course  he was surrounded by friends from all parts of the world. Valerio is in fact a man well known.

Despite being a star in the firmament of the universe of Cuban cigars, is a kind person and sociable. A true gentleman. To the point of inviting me at his home in the city of Havana, to show part of his fantastic collection.

Upon arrivingat  home, Valerio gives me a Lancero, I turn on immediately. A cigar memorable.

We begin to talk about Cuban cigars. Valerio knows things. A true master. So I enchantment to listen. Just to give you an idea, Valerio moved to the Caribbean 39 years ago!

I could not ask him for an interview. Read it carefully, my dear aficionados, for sure you will find something interesting.

1) How did you approach the world of Cuban cigar?

I started smoking in 1972 After twenty years in the restaurant world, I decided to take a break. I moved to Havana and I fell in love with the world of habanos.

2) How many cigars do you smoke per day?

Five cigars.

3) when you turn on the first cigar of the day?

At 6:30 AM

4) You told me that you like to smoke a cigar when you drive, another time you prefer to smoke?

The urge to smoke a good cigar is like eating and making love, when it comes the desire you just do it.

5) a  memorable smoke?

Fifteen  memorables smokes I guess. I was in Ravello. Maybe it was the atmosphere that is breathed,  I smoked 15 Dunhill Cabinetta. Truly memorable!

6) you are a man who travels often, a place where you prefer to smoke?

When I am in Cuba, I like to smoke in my house where I am surrounded by my things,  I love smoking to the patio of the hotel Nacional too.

When I’m in Rome, I like to smoke in front of the Colosseum.

When I’m in London, I like to smoke a diadema along Regent street, thinking back to my life.

When I am at Milan, I like to smoke in the house of my friend Paul De Sury or sitting together at a table in the bar, but giving back to the world. So we enjoy good Monarcas of H.Upmann.

7) What is the cigar for you?

Cuban cigar is a way of life. My whole life revolves around the cigar. I sell  cigars to normal people who smoke, I sell smoke to cigars  smokers.

8) What you match the cigar?

I am totally opposed to the pairing. I smoke a good cigar smoke  alone. Alcohol irritates the mouth too. At most I match a Port or a Madeira. If I smoke a vintage cigar , then I match the tea so lowers the temperature of the tongue.

9) an advice to give to a beginner?

Smoking for pleasure, not for showing off.

10) how to smoke a good cigar?

To smoke a good cigar, a very important thing is the posture. See how I am sitting. On a rocking chair.

The head should be tilted backwards, smoking, keeping the mouth open. Never too much smoke in the mouth.

Cut the cigar completely, no to cuts in V or with the punch.

If you smoke a cigar vintage, smoke it should be turned off for four minutes. So I savor its features. After you turn it on.

Always remember one thing, the cigar should be smoked for what it is. It does not solve the problems and it is not a medicine.

Valerio Cornale è uno dei maggiori collezionisti al mondo di oggetti di antiquariato legati ai sigari cubani, nonché proprietario de La Casa del Habano delle isole Cayman.

Ho incontrato Valerio la prima volta al Festival del Habano. Era Febbraio 2005. Indossava un panama e fumava un diadema. Da allora non ho avuto più il modo di vederlo.

Il caso ha voluto che lo incontrassi questo ottobre presso La Casa del Habano del Club Havana. Altro panama, altro sigaro. Questa volta fumava un Behike 52. Naturalmente era circondato da amici provenienti da tutte le parti del mondo. Valerio infatti è un uomo molto conosciuto.

Nonostante sia una stella del firmamento dell’universo dei sigari cubani, è una persona gentile e socievole. Un vero gentleman. Al punto da invitarmi presso la sua casa nella città dell’Avana, per mostrarmi parte della sua fantastica collezione.

Appena arrivato a casa, Valerio mi offre un Lancero, che accendo immediatamente. Un sigaro memorabile.

Iniziamo a parlare di sigari cubani. Valerio ne sa di cose. Un vero maestro. Cosi mi incanto ad ascoltarlo. Tanto per farvi un’idea, Valerio si è trasferito ai Caraibi 39 anni fa!

Non potevo non chiedergli un’intervista. Leggetela attentamente, miei cari aficionados, di sicuro troverete qualche spunto interessante.

1)Come ti sei avvicinato al mondo del sigaro cubano?

Iniziai a fumare nel 1972. Dopo venti anni trascorsi nel mondo della ristorazione, decisi di prendermi una pausa. Mi trasferii all’Avana e mi innamorai del mondo degli habanos.

2)quanti sigari fumi al giorno?

Cinque sigari.

3) quando accendi il primo sigaro della giornata?

Alle 6:30 del mattino

4) mi hai detto che ti piace fumare il sigaro quando guidi, un altro momento che preferisci fumare?

La voglia di fumare un buon sigaro è come mangiare e fare l’amore, quando arriva la voglia lo fai e basta.

5) una fumata memorabile?

Quindici  fumate memorabili direi. Mi trovavo a Ravello. Sarà stato per l’atmosfera che si respirava  fumai 15 Dunhill Cabinetta. Veramente memorabili!

6)sei un uomo che viaggia spesso, un posto che preferisci dove fumare?

Quando sono a Cuba, mi piace fumare a casa mia dove sono circondato dalle mie cose, e adoro fumare al patio dell’hotel Nacional.

Quando sono a Roma, mi piace fumare davanti al Colosseo.

Quando sono a Londra, mi piace fumare un diadema lungo Regent street, ripensando alla mia vita.

Quando sono a Milano mi piace fumare a casa del mio amico Paul De Sury o seduti insieme al tavolino del bar, dando però le spalle al mondo. Cosi ci godiamo dei buoni Monarcas di H.Upmann.

7)cos’è il sigaro per te?

Il sigaro cubano è un modo di vita. Tutta la mia vita gira intorno al sigaro.

Vendo sigari alle persone normali che fumano, vendo fumo ai fumatori di sigari.

8) cosa abbini al sigaro?

Sono assolutamente contrario agli abbinamenti. Un buon sigaro lo fumo da solo. L’alcool irrita troppo la bocca. Al massimo abbino un Porto o un Madeira. Se poi fumo un sigaro vintage, allora abbino del tè cosi abbassa la temperatura della lingua.

9) un consiglio da dare ad un neofita?

Fumare per piacere, non per mettersi in mostra.

10) come fumare un buon sigaro?

Per fumare un buon sigaro, una cosa molto importante è la postura. Vedi come sono seduto. Su una sedia a dondolo. La testa deve essere reclinata, fumare tenendo la bocca aperta.

Inalare solamente il fumo necessario. Mai troppo fumo in bocca.

Tagliare il sigaro completamente, no ai tagli a V o con il punch.

Se fumi un sigaro vintage, dovresti fumarlo da spento per quattro minuti. Cosi ne assapori le sue caratteristiche. Solo dopo lo accendi.

Ricorda sempre una cosa, il sigaro va fumato per quello che è. Non risolve i problemi e non è una medicina.

Sono fiero ed onorato di aver incontrato Valerio e di essere stato suo ospite. Spero di incontrarlo presto. Magari la prossima volta che sono a l’Avana.
